muskie land

smokey odors linger lakeside

near log-built supper clubs

as speckled muskies leap

at false frogs,

and delicate fawns shake their heads

at the absurdity

of curious cows gathered

at road’s edge — gossiping.

orphaned leaves tumble, unguided,

across unmarked borders as

angry owners chase chipmunks

across elegant lawns.

lost geese, honk out for directions,

sailing in triangles, back and forth,

as onlookers shout —

“you betcha!”

while chubby shoppers

dodge scooters rolling through

markets aisles—

beeping,

and virtue is measured

by the count of offspring —

while the beauty of the northwoods

settles in the hearts of visitors.
